Three types of awards will be given:

  1. Project Grants
  2. General Operating Funds
  3. Capital Grants

1. Project Grants

Awards, not usually more than $10,000 per annum, may be made to support specific research or other projects. The application of not more than three double-spaced pages, should describe the need for the project (e.g., how will the status of animals be improved); outline the protocol for the study; discuss the feasibility of the project; it’s likely chance for success and how it will be evaluated; provide a projected annual budget and time for completion; and list all other entities approached for financial support, and the status of those applications.

The qualifications of the project director should also be provided. Proposals will be judged by a number of criteria, including originality, potential impact on animal welfare and number of animals affected, time frame, the project’s feasibility, the value for the program or data. .

2. General Operating Fuunds

Awards, generally not more than $5,000 per annum, may be made to small organizations that submit an application of not more than three double-spaced typed pages (not including appendices) containing:

(a) Evidence that the organization has been striving in substantial ways to reduce animal pain, stress and suffering and improve animal welfare
(b) Evidence, in detail, that the organization is making a concerted effort to assess the effectiveness of its programs;
(c) An outline of existing or planned programs, with their rationale, which will benefit animals and have a reasonable chance of success; and
(d) Evidence that the organization is accountable to the public (.e.g, annual reports, audited accounts, and 990 forms.

Note: Awards for general operating funds may not be applied toward construction, rent or mortgage payments.

3. Capital Grants

Awards toward the construction or remodeling of animal shelters, generally up to $5,000 on a one-for-three matching basis.

The purpose of these awards is to help small organizations in areas where currently there are inadequate animal care facilities to either rebuild new, or to improve existing shelters. Therefore, in general, no capital project with a total cost of more than $200,000 will be considered.

Applications should be no more than three double-spaced typed pages (not including appendices). The applicant should show a need for the construction project and should identify how many animals would be housed there on a weekly and annual basis.

Additional information on proposed policy for adoption, surrender, and euthanasia; time frame for completion; project budget; plan for meeting future animal expenses; amount of money raised and how a Parks challenge grant (if awarded), would be matched.
